September 2006

I’ve always thought of September as the start of a new year. Yes, I know that it really begins in January - maybe fiscal folks think of July that way – but I guess it’s because of school that I think of September as the beginning of something new. For so many years, from September to June was school, followed by a long, hot, lazy summer of play days at my grandma’s, swimming at the Sylvan plunge and eating those great hamburgers at the snack bar, summer camp, and finally preparing with anticipation for the start of another school year.

So, here we are, and September feels like we’re starting the year. At RUCC, that start is full of events and new beginnings. We kick off the long awaited speaker’s forum series with the noted Rev. Barry W. Lynn on Friday, September 8, 2006 , at 7:30 pm in the sanctuary. The title of Rev. Lynn’s speech will be “Religious Values, Yes; Theocracy, No.” Rev. Lynn is the executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, has been an activist and lawyer in the civil liberties field, and is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. Rev. Lynn’s speech will be followed by a Q & A period. I hope you will all plan on attending this very special event. Please help us get the word out. Invite your friends, families, and associates. We hope to have a good attendance.

There will be a church retreat on September 22 to 24 at Pilgrim Pines. This will be a great opportunity for us to get to know each other better as the focus will be on fellowship and community.

The other major event of the month will be Jeanne Favreau-Sorvillo’s ordination on Saturday, September 30. This will be a special day for Jeanne and for us. Please save the date.

We are a small, but growing church. In spite of our modest size, we are a church filled with energy and with the Spirit, putting our faith into action, making a difference in each other’s lives, in the community, and maybe making a little difference in the world. This promises to be a good year as we continue the journey together.
